Pravda vítězí

"Pravda vítězí" is the Czech Republic national motto.  It translates  to "truth prevails."  I've felt like this is a strong motto for someone in the fields of politics or journalism.

My affinity for this motto may be due, at least in part, to its origin. It was dervived from a quote by Jan Hus, "Seek the truth, hear the truth, learn the truth, love the truth, speak the truth, hold the truth and defend the truth until death."

Hus was a theologian and philosopher in Bohemia. Hus was an early, central figure in reformation of the church which led to Protestantism. He was a predecessor and key influence on Martin Luther.

My grandmother said when I was young my ancestors were Hussites, or followers of Jan Hus. Some of the Hussites went to war with Catholic crusaders while others fled Bohemia. Many of my family ended up in the Scottish Highlands.

Our surname itself has adapted to new spellings and pronunciations due to migration. Some pronunciations and spellings suggest their name reflected they were either related or a follower of Hus.

Hus' name translates to "goose." Our surname translates to "little goose."

Jan Hus was excommunicated by Alexander V although it was not enforced at first. He continued to speak out on issues with the church, especially against the sale of indulgences.  Antipope John XXIII had the excommunication enforced which resulted in a two year exile.

He was promised safe passage to express his views with the Council of Constance. When he complied, he was arrested and told to recant his views. Upon his refusal, he was sentenced to death for heresy. Jan Hus was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415.

Just before his execution, Hus is credited to foretell of Luther. "They will roast a goose now, but in a hundred years, a swan will sing and they will not be able to stop him." Goose was a translation of his name and the swan was a symbol of Martin Luther. It was just over 100 years later that Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenburg church.
